Above- and belowground nitrogen distribution of a red clover-perennial ryegrass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient established by organic and conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Hammelehle, Andreas; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
Aims Belowground legume nitrogen (N) composed of roots and rhizodeposition is an important N input to soils, but published data of belowground N vary broadly, probably due to extrapolation from short-term experiments and dissimilar growing conditions. We quantified belowground N inputs of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) during two consecutive years in a clover-grass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient. Methods We established a red clover-perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) model sward in microplots located in field plots of the DOK experiment, which has a 33-year history of organic and conventional cropping, resulting in a soil nutrient availability gradient. Four treatments were examined: the zero fertilisation control, bio-organic...

Auswirkungen des letzten Nutzungstermins von Weiden im Herbst auf den Ertrag im darauf folgenden Frühling Organic Eprints
Lobsiger, Martin; Mosimann, Eric; Jeangros, Bernard; Lüscher, Andreas.
The consequences of a late closing date in autumn on pasture performance in spring are mostly unknown under Mid-European climatic conditions. An experiment on two sites in the Swiss lowlands showed that a delay of the closing date from early October to late November reduced spring yield by 50% (238-821 kg DM/ha) in early April and 18% (556-986 kg DM/ha) in Mai. This reduction of spring yield was particularly high (up to 75%) if the residual herbage mass before winter was below 300-500 kg DM/ha. On the other hand residual herbage mass above this threshold did not increase spring yield considerably. Thus, the utilisation of pasture in late autumn is recommended, if conditions are favourable and if grazing does not reduce the residual herbage mass below...

Below ground nitrogen dynamics in the sequence clover-grass maize in the DOK long term experiment Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Frossard, Emmanuel; Hammelehle, Andreas.
We investigated the effect of organic versus conventional cropping systems on the below ground nitrogen inputs of Trifolium pratense L., its transfer to corresponding grass and the fate in the soil organic matter in the clover-grass ley of the DOK long term experiment, Switzerland. BGN tended to be largest in conventional and organic treatments with standard fertilisation and decreased with lower fertilisation intensity. The largest amount of clover N transferred to grass was observed in the minerally fertilised conventional treatment. Clover N derived from rhizodeposition was rapidly stabilised in all treatments to clay rich fractions and thus clover N will have a relatively low direct N contribution to subsequent nonlegumes.

Positive Mischungseffekte auf Ertrag und Stickstoffversorgung in Klee-Gras-Mischungen Organic Eprints
Huguenin-Elie, Olivier; Nyfeler, Daniel; Suter, Matthias; Frossard, Emmanuel; Lüscher, Andreas.
High plant species richness has been shown to positively influence grassland biomass production. In mixtures containing two forage grass and two forage legume species we quantified the diversity-productivity effect and the nitrogen economy of the swards across a broad range of species proportions. Positive diversity-productivity effects resulted in higher yield (up to +35%) of the four-species grass-clover-mixtures than the highest yielding monoculture (transgressive overyielding). The diversity-productivity effect depended on the species proportion in the mixture and was maximal in well balanced mixtures with a clover proportion of 40 – 60%. Transgressive overyielding was significant over a fairly wide range of clover proportions. Well balanced...

Symbiotische Stickstofffixierung in biologisch und konventionell bewirtschafteten Wiesen Organic Eprints
Oberson, Astrid; Frossard, Emmanuel; Mayer, Jochen; Flura, Thomas; Mäder, Paul; Lüscher, Andreas.
Because of lower nitrogen (N) input it is assumed that organically cultivated legumes fix more N2 than legumes grown under conventional cropping. Using the natural 15N abundance method, we assessed symbiotic N2 fixation by white and red clover. The clover was growing in a grass-clover meadow installed as part of the crop rotation of a long term (30 years) field experiment. Dry matter yields were similar for organic and conventional meadows on plots fertilized at levels typical for the respective system, but organic meadows tended to higher clover yields. The proportion of N derived from atmosphere (Ndfa) in both clover species was on average 84%. It was not significantly affected by the cropping system. Because of more legumes, amounts of fixed N2...

Wurzelbürtige Stickstoff- und Kohlenstoffeinträge in den Boden: Erkenntnisse aus sieben Jahren DOK Wurzelforschung Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Hirte, Juliane; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Frossard, Emmanuel; Mäder, Paul; Hammelehle, Andreas.
We investigated nitrogen and carbon below ground inputs of soybean, clover-grass and maize and management effects of biological and conventional systems in the DOK long term experiment. We found for soybean increasing below ground C and N inputs with decreasing fertilization intensity whereas those effects were small for clover-grass. Below ground nitrogen inputs of red clover could be estimated by above ground N multiplied with a factor of 0.5.
